About Autism 

Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people.

Autism is a lifelong condition that affects how people perceive, communicate and interact with others.

Autism is a spectrum condition. This is because of the different ways it can impact  people and the type of support they may need. Some autistic people need very little or no support in their everyday lives, and others may need a high level of care.

The National Autistic society provides helpful information about being autistic.

Signs of autism in adults

Autism in adults can sometimes include:

• repetitive behaviour 
• sensitivity to light, sound, touch or taste
• intense meltdowns or shutdowns from becoming overwhelmed 
• having highly focused interests or hobbies
• difficulties with social interaction and communication
• extreme anxiety

Support from your GP

If you have signs of autism, you can talk to a health professional such as your GP.  They may refer you to the Sutton ADHD/ASD Diagnostic Service.

If you are a parent or carer of an autistic child, you can get support from Suttons Local Offer.

Support from the Council

If you have a diagnosis and you're having difficulty with daily tasks, you can request an assessment of your needs. This will help us to decide what support you need and how you can get it.

Support for carers

If you look after someone with autism, you can request a carer's assessment.
