Becoming a home childcarer (nanny)
Nannies and home carers are employed by parents to care for children in the family home.
You can register to become a nanny on GOV.UK.
What’s involved
A Nanny can live in or outside of the families home.
They are responsible for the sole care of the children. Other light duties may also be needed.
Register to be a Nanny
Nannies are not required to register with Ofsted but they can join the voluntary Ofsted register. Nannies that choose to register provide parents with reassurance that they have a clear:
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS previously CRB) check
- first aid, and
- basic childcare training
What you’ll need
If you don’t have a level 3 qualification in childcare, you'll need to complete a:
- level 3 OCN (Open College Network)
- Common Core Skills training course, or
- alternative level 3 childcare qualification
