School travel
We have a duty to promote use of sustainable travel and transport in line with the education and inspections Act 2006. We are taking actions such as:
- proving free training to pupils and safe cycle routes/walkways to schools
- helping to reduce the congestion on the roads during term times to make journeys quicker and less stressful for all, and
- reduce C02 emissions
Travelling to school can be made active by:
- walking or cycling the whole journey or
- combing walking with public transport
You can send us an email about school travel.
Cycling to school
There are over 1000 cycle parking stands in school premises in the borough. Every school can take part in free cycle training for their year 5 and 6 classes.
Scooter training is available to all primary school pupils. You can book a training session on our Cycle skills page.
You can ask your child’s school about thier travel plan. Some schools offer:
- minibus travel for students,
- cycling groups and
- walking once a week
Walking to school
We've put measures in place to making walking to school safer, such as:
- traffic calming measures
- 20 mph zones around schools
- lollipop ladies
- zebra crossings
- improved signage and lighting
If your child is 16 to 18 years old
If your 16 to 18 year old is attending further education, they can get free travel.
Find out about the zip oyster card on the Transport for London website.
Driving to school
If you need to drive to school, you could consider car sharing. This is when you group up with other families living near you and share the weekly school runs.
