Sutton's vision for growth

Sutton’s vision for growth took another step forward this week, as we announced our preferred development partner who will transform key sites in Sutton town centre, including the St Nicholas shopping centre.
The ambitious project will bring a new Civic Hub, affordable homes, retail spaces, a new library and public realm improvements. It’s an exciting plan that will breathe new life into Sutton, driving economic growth and building much-needed homes
The regeneration of Sutton Town Centre shows the Council’s ambition to secure the borough’s future. Yet, without significant changes in how local authorities are funded, councils across the country—Sutton included—will continue to face an uphill battle to meet the growing needs of their communities.
Earlier this week, I attended the Local Government Conference in Harrogate. There I met with other council leaders and colleagues from local authorities from across the country. We discussed the challenges we are facing and share some of the innovative ideas to help us to keep providing services while dealing with the budget challenges.
The recurring theme at the Local Government Conference was the demands on services like social care, housing and temporary accommodation. Along with other council leaders, I am eagerly awaiting the outcome of the new government’s first Budget on 30 October. This Budget will be crucial in determining whether Sutton can deliver on our vision for growth while maintaining the vital services our residents rely on every day.
For Sutton, this is a moment of great opportunity, but also one of great uncertainty. The Council has set out a bold vision for the future, but its ability to see it through will depend not only on local leadership, but on support from a national government that understands the financial realities facing councils.
Leader of the Council,
Councillor Barry Lewis
