Carshalton Road Closure Update 4 July at 14:00
- All residents and businesses can return to their properties.
- The Council is carrying out door knocking this afternoon to check residents have settled back into their homes.
- Extra waste collections are being supplied for households who will be emptying fridges and freezers as a result of the power being off.
- The water quality checks have been complete and passed
- The road remains closed but SGN and SES water are working hard to reopen it as soon as possible.
Carshalton Road Closure Update 3 July at 16:40
Access to properties:
- SGN has confirmed that it is now safe for all residents and businesses to return to their properties.
- Residents or businesses that left keys for properties or have new keys to their property should visit the SGN Incident Unit on site at Carshalton Road. The Incident Unit will be staffed through the night.
- Residents should contact SGN on 0800 975 1818, and SES Water on 01737 772000 regarding any complaints or enquiries regarding the incident.
- Vehicle access for residents living within the cordon can be granted - residents should report to SGN or SES Water at the cordon on Carshalton Road.
- The Council will collect additional waste as required from the affected properties over the next few days.
A232 Carshalton Road:
- The road remains closed and will be closed into next week.
- SGN has completed pedestrian access along Carshalton Road.
- SES water has completed their repair to the burst water main and are awaiting water quality safety checks.
- Once all checks have been confirmed, the repairs to the road can commence.
- The following buses remain on diversion in both directions: 154, S3, 407, 627, and SL7.
Advice centre
- Affected residents can continue to go to the Westcroft Leisure Centre, Westcroft Rd, Carshalton SM5 2TG, to use the showers and cafe. A member of Sutton Council staff will be present until 6pm today (3 July 2025). After this the advice centre will close.

- The road remains closed and will be closed into next week.
- SES water has completed their repair to the burst water main and are awaiting water quality safety checks.
- Once all checks have been confirmed, the repairs to the road can commence.
- SGN is working to reinstate some pedestrian access along Carshalton Road which we expect to be by the end of today.
- Some residents returned to their homes last night and we expect more to be able to return today. SGN will continue to contact residents directly when they are able to return to their homes.
- SGN are encouraging residents to contact them on 0800 975 1818.
- Affected residents can continue to go to the Westcroft Leisure Centre, Westcroft Rd, Carshalton SM5 2TG, to use the showers and cafe. The leisure centre will close at 10:30pm this evening. A representative from Sutton Council will be at the leisure centre until 8:00pm and we will have a presence tomorrow as well.

The Council has been informed by SGN that some residents who have been unable to access their homes, will soon be allowed to return. Until you receive a call from SGN, please stay where you are. Unfortunately we cannot confirm when SGN will contact you, but SGN will contact you directly when your home is safe to return to.

- SGN is currently assessing if it's safe for residents evacuated yesterday to return home today.
- SES water can now start their inspection and assess the situation.

Update Tuesday 1 July
A burst water main and a gas leak have caused the A232 in Carshalton Road to be partly closed opposite the BP garage, SM5 3PZ.
That part of the road is likely to remain closed for a number of days.
The Council is supporting Transport for London, who is responsible for this road, as well as the emergency services and the utility companies (SGN and SES Water) who are on-site working to fix the issues and make the area safe.
Resident information
Westcroft Leisure Centre
The Council has set up a rest centre at the Westcroft Leisure Centre, Westcroft Rd, Carshalton SM5 2TG, where affected residents can use the showers and cafe. A council officer will also be there to help answer any questions. The leisure centre will close at 10:30pm and re-open at 6:30am.
Access to homes
Around 25 homes on Carshalton Road have been evacuated while the gas leak and burst water main are fixed.
The Council and SGN will be issuing letters to those residents who cannot attend their property with information and advice from the Council on finding alternative temporary accommodation. A copy of the letter to residents can be found here.
