The entire borough has been designated as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA).
This is a result of monitored and modeled exceedances of the National Air Quality Objectives (NAQOs) for:
- nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and
- particulate matter (PM10)
Part IV of the Environment Act (1995) requires that local authorities must draw up a five-year Air Quality Action Plan to bring air quality within an AQMA into compliance with the NAQOs. We also write annual reports on progress against the Action Plan which are submitted to the Greater London Authority.
Our Air Quality Action Plan
Our Air Quality Action Plan contains 36 specific actions. These are divided into seven areas of work:
- cleaner transport
- delivery servicing and freight
- borough fleet actions
- emissions from developments and buildings
- public health and awareness raising
- localised solutions
- monitoring and other core statutory duties
