How to apply

Before applying for a grant, you must request an occupational therapy assessment.

The occupational therapy team will talk to you about how you're managing at home. They'll recommend equipment or changes to make tasks easier.

If you're eligible for a grant, they'll refer you to the housing team.

If the person with needs is an adult

Who can apply

To apply for a grant you must:

  • be the owner, tenant, licensee or landlord of the property you want to adapt
  • intend to occupy the property as your main home throughout the grant period (5 years)
  • get your landlord's agreement to make changes, if you're a tenant

You'll only be eligible for a grant if we consider the changes to be:

  • necessary
  • appropriate
  • reasonable
  • practical

How you can use the grant

You can spend the grant on adaptations to help you or someone you care for:

  • get in and out of the home more easily
  • move around inside the home more easily
  • get essential facilities for the home

Changes could include:

  • widening doors and installing ramps
  • installing a stair lift
  • providing a downstairs bathroom
  • improving or providing a heating system
  • adapting heating or lighting controls so they are easier to use

How much you can get

The amount you'll get is based on a financial assessment (means test) of your income, savings and investments.

If the adaptations are for someone under 18, we won't ask you to do a financial assessment.

If you sell a property after receiving a grant

If you sell a property within 5 years of receiving a grant of more than £5,000, we'll ask you to repay some of the money. The most we'll ask you to repay is £10,000.
