A Low Traffic Area is a scheme to reduce motor vehicle traffic in residential streets.
They minimise or remove the amount of traffic that comes from vehicles using the streets to get to another destination. This is often referred to as 'through traffic' or 'rat runs'.
These roads are still accessible by car to residents living in the area.
After consultation with residents, we have put Low Traffic Areas in place in some parts of Sutton.
The benefits
By limiting through-traffic, Low Traffic Areas can:
- reduce air pollution
- lower collision rates
- increase community activity
- encourage people to switch to greener forms of transport
- make streets more pleasant
